Messerschmitt Me 264 (Amerika Bomber)

Messerschmitt Me 264 (Amerika Bomber)

Messerschmitt Me 264 (Amerika Bomber)

The Messerschmitt Me 264 was intended as a long-range aircraft and reconnaissance platform that was to supply the German Luftwaffe with a bomber capable of hitting targets within America as well as support Kriegsmarine U-boat operations in the Atlantic. However, an underperforming prototype and subsequent construction delays soon pushed the Me 264 into the background as German authorities moved their focus to more promising projects. Development of the Me 264 spanned some eight years, culminating in only three prototypes — only one of which was able to achieve flight (this being the Me 264 V1). Design of this interesting aircraft was credited to Wolfgang Degel, Paul Konrad and Waldemar Voigt of Messerschmitt.

Contents

The origin of the Me 264 design came from Messerschmitt’s long-range reconnaissance aircraft project, the P.1061, of the late 1930s. A variant on the P.1061 was the P.1062 of which three prototypes were built, with only two «engines» to the P.1061’s four, but they were, in fact, the more powerful DB 601 inverted V-12 engines, successfully used in the long-range Messerschmitt Me 261, itself originating as the Messerschmitt P.1064 design of 1937. The DB 606’s later use, and badly-designed engine installations in the Heinkel He 177A’s airframe design managed to get them derided by Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring as «welded-together engines» in August 1942. In early 1941, six P.1061 prototypes were ordered from Messerschmitt, under the designation Me 264. This was later reduced to three prototypes.

The progress of these projects was initially slow, but after Germany had declared war on the United States, the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM) started a more serious programme in the spring of 1942 for a very long range bomber, with the result that a larger, six-engine aircraft with a greater bomb load was called for. To meet this demand, proposals were put forward for the Junkers Ju 390, Focke-Wulf Ta 400, a redesign of the unfinalized and unbuilt Heinkel He 277 design to give the Heinkel firm an entry in the Amerika Bomber program later in 1943, and a design study for a six-engine Messerschmitt Me 264B. As the Junkers Ju 390 could use components already in use for the Ju 290 this design was chosen. The Me 264 was not abandoned however as the Kriegsmarine (German Navy) separately demanded a long-range maritime patrol and attack aircraft to replace the converted Fw 200 Condor in this role. [2] This was reinforced by an opinion given by then-Generalmajor Eccard Freiherr von Gablenz of the Wehrmacht Heer (German Army) in May 1942, as von Gablenz had been recruited by Generalfeldmarschall Erhard Milch at the time to give his opinion on the suitability of the Me 264 for the Amerika Bomber mission, with von Gablenz echoing the Kriegsmarine’s later opinion. [3] As a result, the two pending prototypes were ordered to be completed as development prototypes for the Me 264A ultra long-range reconnaissance aircraft. [4]

Messerschmitt Me 264 And Hitler’s Unfulfilled Dreams Of Setting New York Ablaze

Messerschmitt Me 264 And Hitler’s Unfulfilled Dreams Of Setting New York Ablaze | World War Wings Videos

Hitler has been so obsessed with the idea of seeing New York or other major US cities into flames that his strategists began developing plans of a trans-Atlantic attack that would cripple one of the biggest players in the Allied force. He thought of terrorizing the American population in addition to showcasing the Nazi’s military capabilities. If carried out successfully, it could also force the United States to utilize their antiaircraft defenses to protect itself thereby leaving less for Great Britain and other Allies.

We’re Talking Super Long-Range

Then began the “Amerika Bomber” which was an initiative of the Luftwaffe in using a long-range strategic bomber. The Messerschmitt Me 264 became an integral part of this project. The target would be 5,800 km or 3,600 mi from Germany which required intensive and advanced planning.

Idea Started Earlier Than You Might Have Thought

Although this idea was conceived early on, around 1938, the designs, concepts and proposals were given to the commander-in-chief Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring in 1942. Because no one had that kind of technology yet, Hitler ordered the development of a bomber that could fly the distance and deliver the small payload of about 5 tons. Several designs were entertained but only few made it as prototypes — the rest remained on paper. The Messerschmitt Me 264 can accomplish two things: bomb New York and support operations of U-Boat fleets.

According to military historian James P. Duffy, Hitler “saw in the Azores the … possibility for carrying out aerial attacks from a land base against the United States … [which in turn would] force it to build up a large antiaircraft defense.”

But There Were Problems…

During the in-flight testing however, it revealed flaws which can severely sabotage the entire operation. The plane itself was too heavy and on top of that, it’s rate of climb was low. It was just not the war bird for the mission. In the span of eight years, three were developed and only one achieved flight. In the end, construction was stopped on September 23, 1944. One of the reasons being attributed why it was not developed further was the consistent attack of the US against German factories.

Whether it was the doing of the United States or unintentionally the Germans’, it’s safe to say that the plans of “Amerika Bomber” just burst in flames.

«The author has obviously done a great deal of research into this most interesting aircraft. The political machinations alone are worth the read. There are great photos of the aircraft, most of which were new to me. Some superb art work of what might have been are also a bonus. It makes for an engrossing read and one that you really should have on your book shelf.» — Modeling Madness

Product Description

As Europe plunged into World War II, Hitler ordered the development of a hi-tech secret weapon capable of taking the war across the Atlantic—the Messerschmitt Me 264. Chosen from designs for an "Amerika Bomber" tendered by Messerschmitt, Junkers, and Focke-Wulf, this ultra-long-range aircraft would be capable of attacking cities in the United States. Just one month before the attack on Pearl Harbor and the American entry into World War II, Hitler was promising, privately, to wage a "new war" against the USA after his victories in Europe. Dazzling digital artwork and 50 rare archival photographs perfectly complement the detailed analysis offered by Robert Forsyth as he examines the development, intended role, and influence of the aircraft that Hitler planned to use to bomb New York City.

I don’t think that Britsh have the enginnering knowledge (theoretical knowledge in engineering), and enough developed infrastructure (advanced wind-tunels) to produce the Victory bomber during the ww2. However ME-264 was an existing bomber.

The biggest problem of British engineering was the lack of enough strong theoretical and more importantly the higher mathematical education in their universities of technology. These huge British disadvantage in engineering education started to disappear only in the post ww2 period.
